Dance Photography

Dance photography is an art of bringing out dancers’ characteristic style. Dance photographers capture the key moment of a figure or a jump, composing bodies in light and shade. They require exceptional skill to play with bodies and light.

Dance photography is extremely tricky and very rewarding. Dance photographer has to capture the dance, the essence of the dance, the lighting and everything, and yet it's very hard to do so. Normally much of the professional dance is done with set-ups and lighting especially for the photography.

To get more sharpness in dance photography, be prepared to anticipate lifts/leaps, etc. There's a tiny moment at the top of every good lift or leap when the dancer is almost motionless and you can often get that sharp. It is necessary to use a tripod for capturing best steps from different angles.

Avoid auto focus, when shooting dance photography on the fly. It often seems to be having to work too hard to catch up with the dancers. Manual focus is better to use for shooting such events. For capturing best pose it is necessary to shoot two dress rehearsals. The first one gives you ideas of the best moments to catch so you're better prepared for them the second shoot.

For blur to work in dance photography, it's helpful to have something in the shot that isn't blurred as a point of reference for the motion. The recent dance photography scene is not very large, but it is very varied. In these days dance photographers focus on the staging, choreography and ensemble than on the individual pose.
